A pilot run proves a process can work; a production line must prove it can work repeatedly at target throughput. The two are not the same.
Record the trial properly
Document material and formulation, fill depth and tray format, freezing route, chamber pressure and shelf temperature profile, product temperature, endpoint criterion, and the finished-product test results. A curve without its conditions cannot be transferred to a larger machine.
What changes with scale
- Heat transfer across larger shelves and deeper or denser loading.
- Vapor flow and the condenser’s ability to keep pace.
- Loading and unloading time and the risk of moisture pickup.
- Edge effects that are small in a pilot unit but visible in production.
Use a staged plan
Move from material trial to a defined pilot batch, then to a production configuration with a documented scale-up margin. Each stage should narrow the operating window and confirm the finished-product specification before capital is committed.
